Sandhill cranes migrate to Southern Arizona every year. Many of us never knew this or have seen them. So we decided to do an extraordinary outing to view the sandhill cranes and watch them fly! The sandhill cranes begin arriving in Arizona in September until mid March. They migrate from Cananda, Alaska & Siberia. Wintering areas selected by cranes feature shallow water roosting areas with low vegetation and are close fields of grain crops. The cranes leave their roosting area in the mornings and near sunset the cranes fly back to their roosting area. We got up close to the cranes and enjoyed a picnic dinner while watching them in flight!
