WHERE’S YOUR GREEN VALLEY GRIN?
If you spend more time working on your house and yard than you do spending quality time with friends and family, it’s probably a good time to start exploring your retirement living options.
“I spent a lot of time maintaining the house, the outside of the house and the yard. I didn’t have near the social activities that I have now.” – Ron Birdsong, resident of The Fountains at La Cholla
MEET RON AND JEANNE BIRDSONG, GREEN VALLEY RESIDENTS FOR 21 YEARS WHO ARE LOVING LIFE EVEN MORE NOW AT THE FOUNTAINS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Ron and Jeanne Birdsong on Thursday, February 2nd, 2017. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
When Ron and Jeanne retired from the aerospace industry, they moved from Utah to Green Valley, Arizona, where their social lives revolved around golf, hiking and volunteering. As much as they loved it, at 80 and 72, they decided to sell their Green Valley home and move to Tucson. After visiting ten or 11 communities, they selected a spacious Fountains casita. Now they’re not only enjoying a more active social life, but Ron, an avid hiker and guide, also has more time to finish hiking the Arizona Trail (he’s already completed 650 miles). Plus, Jeanne doesn’t even need to get in her car to continue her volunteer work at Casa de la Luz.
KEEP AN OPEN MIND
If you’d asked them two years ago, Ron and Jeanne Birdsong would have said they’d never move to a retirement community. But visiting friends who’d moved to one opened their minds to the possibility. Now, instead of spending half their lives on home and yard maintenance or driving to and from Green Valley, their time is theirs and they’re finding a lot more ways to enjoy life stress free. “…we didn’t want our children – if one of us happened to become incapacitated or die – to have to go to all that trouble and burden of making a move and trying to help us with the decisions. We wanted to be proactive and be in a place where we were already settled and had support before any of that happened.” – Jeanne Birdsong, resident of The Fountains at La Cholla
GATHERING NO MOSS
Ron and Jeanne were seeking a no-maintenance rental with no large entry fee and they found it at The Fountains. Not cut out for apartment living, they love their Verbena casita, which has two bedrooms, two baths, a nice backyard and unobstructed views of the Catalinas. Jeanne enjoys Bible studies, meditation and walks in the wash. They both take advantage of outings, fitness classes and much more. “People invite us over for drinks before dinner. You know, we invite people over here. We have plenty of social activity. I’m not one that wants to sit around because I know what happens if you sit around.” – Ron Birdsong
WHAT YOU WANT, WHEN YOU WANT
Their casita comes with 15 meals per month and for Jeanne, having the option to prepare easy meals when they feel like it is a big plus. Most of all, she appreciates the less frantic pace of in-town living. The challenges of living remotely in Green Valley often left her feeling overcommitted. “And here, you do what you want, when you want to do it and if you don’t want to do it, nobody cares; you’re not locked in. So that’s really quite liberating.” – Jeanne Birdsong
